I’ve seen companies and organizations push “leadership” with their volunteers and managers, but it was always about leading others.
I have no scientific or data driven studies to show this, but I wonder if this focus on leading others without learning how to lead ourselves is the cause of so much stress.
Chronic stress, workplace stress, and burnout are at an all time high. Yet we see so much about leadership and hear companies talking about leadership.
So what is missing? I believe it’s one thing.
We don’t connect leading others with also leading ourselves.
If we don’t lead ourselves in a healthy way, and I don’t mean just physically healthy, we can’t lead others well.
Leading yourself in your personal growth is key if you want to lead others well. And you can’t lead yourself well if you are dealing with chronic stress whether it’s in your personal life or work life.
So how do we lead ourselves well so we manager our stress? I believe it starts with four key areas:
- Understanding ourselves.
- Understanding others.
- Our habits, routines, practices, and rhythms.
- Our mindset.
