Intentions & Mindset

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about intentions and how our mindset is connected to our intentions. Being intentional in our own personal growth can often be hard yet without intention in our personal growth we can’t grow in our leadership. Our leadership is directly impacted by our personal growth.

If we want to grow, whether personally in some area or in our leadership, we have to be intentional. We have to set intentions.

The part of our brain responsible for keeping us safe doesn’t like change, though. Change doesn’t feel safe. It doesn’t like intentions because intentions often mean change.

We’ve all heard the saying “I had the best of intentions.”  Without setting an intention to change we don’t grow.

So how do we set our intentions and stick with them? I believe it comes down to our mindset.

  1. Set expectations that you will fail BUT that failing is okay and you can try again.
  2. When you do fail, have compassion for yourself. Too often we start beating ourselves up and then we just give up. Self-compassion will help quiet that voice in your mind and help your brain know it’s safe so you can try again.
  3. Never give up. Try again. And again. It does get easier.

Do you struggle with setting and sticking to your intentions?
