Are You an Introvert, Extrovert, or Ambivert? (And Why it Matters for How You Lead Yourself and Others)

Thriving doesn’t come from doing more—it comes from knowing yourself better.

We live in a world that celebrates the loudest voice in the room and equates hustle with worth. But what if your overwhelm and burnout aren’t because you’re doing something wrong? What if it’s because you’re wired differently?

Whether you’re an extrovert, introvert, or somewhere in between, understanding how your energy naturally flows is a key step in learning to lead yourself well. This isn’t about sticking a label on yourself. It’s about creating space to breathe, lead, and live in a way that feels more aligned with your values. In a way that refuels you and brings more calm instead of chaos.

What if the overwhelm, stress, and burnout you feel are not flaws, but signals?

Understanding our natural energy rhythm is the first step to moving out of the hurry and hustle culture and stepping into our strengths in a way that is healthy.

While the terms introvert, extrovert, and even ambivert seem to be everywhere these days, I believe knowing this about yourself is foundational in building rhythms and routines that are sustainable.

Energy Styles

  • Extroverts – recharge through connection, process externally, feel drained when they are isolated for too long
  • Introverts – recharge alone or with a small number of close relationships, process internally, can be overstimulated in busy environments
  • Ambiverts – can move between both depending on stress, the setting, or their season of life

Our energy style can change depending on the level of stress we are experiencing so while it will typically be the same there are times it can be fluid.

When we know how we are wired:

  • We can stop comparing ourselves to others.
  • Plan our days (and work) in ways that protect our nervous system.
  • Lead with clarity and not from depletion.

Small changes can make a big difference. Recognizing that other people in our life may need to honor their energy style in different ways than we do can go a long way in reducing conflict and stress.

When do you feel most energized and most drained? What would it look like to honor your energy style this week?

This isn’t about labels or being put in a box. It’s about the freedom to lead yourself and others in ways that help you and those you lead thrive instead of just get through the day.
